2018 Theme: Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World

International Day of Democracy 2018 will focus on finding ways to implement democracy and find ways to solve challenges it faces. This also means facing economic, cultural, and political factors that inhibit democracy in different areas. The United Nations aims to make democracies inclusive by giving underrepresented communities a platform in the political system, and by increasing the innovative nature of response concerning current issues like climate change and migration.

The International Day of Democracy on every September 15th will be a time to emphasize the core values of freedom and respect for the rights of all people. As 2018 is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Day of Democracy will be a celebration of one of its key factors. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that “the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government” (article 21.3), and this has encouraged many constitution makers around the world to include democracy as one of their principles. Democracy also protects the natural environment and advocates for human rights.

Democracy is recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a means to maintain peaceful societies and accountable governments.
