The global impact for migration will be the first intergovernmental negotiated agreement developed under the United Nations to cover all aspects of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive way.
As seen in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which was first introduced September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly developed a global compact for safe, organized and frequent migration. The steps to birth this global compact for migration began in April of 2017. The General Assembly will then hold an intergovernmental conference discussing international migration in 2018 with the goal of implementing the global compact.
The global compact is an important component in improving the governance on migration, addressing the challenges faced in regards to migration, and strengthening the contribution of migrants and migration towards sustainable development.
