As a means to celebrate the philanthropic legacy left behind by Mr. Nelson Mandela on what would have been his 100th birthday, an exhibit honoring Mandela’s contributions was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He led his life dedicated to his cause and advocated for peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development. The displays will be available for viewing at the United Nations Headquarters from July 9 till September 2, 2018. The exhibition, which was planned and organized by the UN Department of Public Information along with the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN, also demonstrates  UN General Council initiatives in light of the South African leader’s legacy.

Mr. Nelson Mandela has made amazing contributions to the lives of people from all backgrounds. He overcame extreme hardships in order for all South Africans to have equal rights. Black South Africans were experiencing oppression that was often likened to the Jim Crow Era. Mandela was jailed for 27 years during the apartheid area fighting for the rights of black people and equality in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela International Day 2018 marks 100 years since this birth.. This celebratory day is an occasion to look back on his life and legacy, and to keep his hope to "make of the world a better place” alive. Mandela was the personification of the highest values of the United Nations. One hundred years since his birth and he is still a major example of compassion and inspiration in our world.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is dedicating this year's Mandela Day to Action Against Poverty, honoring Mandela's leadership and devotion to fighting poverty and promoting social justice for all.
