Young people are typically three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and continuously offered lower quality and lower paying jobs. This heightens labor market inequalities, and puts a strain on those transitioning from school into the workforce. In addition, there are existing inequalities between men and women, and this unfortunate trend is mirrored in the younger generation.

Education and training are key components of success in the labor market. Unfortunately, many do not have access to education and existing systems are failing to address the learning needs of many young people. Surveys of learning outcomes and skills show findings that a large number of youth have low levels of achievement in basic literacy and numeracy. In order to raise awareness on the importance of investing in youth skills development, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate July 15th as World Youth Skills Day.
