The United Nations General Assembly has declared October 31st as World Cities Day. This day was established to promote the global community’s interest in global urbanization. It was established in the hopes that different countries would cooperate in opportunities to address challenges of urbanization, and make contributions towards developing a sustainable community in urban areas.
This year’s general theme is “Better City, Better Life,” as it highlights the need to make improvements in certain areas and tackle challenges that spring forth as a result of urbanization. The General Assembly selected the theme “Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities”, as the main theme umbrella’d by the general theme. The United Nations believes that cities need to be supported correctly in order to be resilient and develop their capacity to swiftly respond in crises and protect human life while continuing to provide infrastructure and services.
