This year is the 25th year of the declaration by the General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The U.N. has prioritized tackling poverty in all its forms and this can be seen in the 17 SDGs and Agenda 2030. As seen in the first Sustainable Development Goal, the General Assembly is making efforts to ensure all people have their basic needs met by the year 2030.

This year is also the  30th anniversary of the Call to Action which was initiated by Father Joseph Wresinski. His Call to Action was the catalyst for the honoring of the World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has greatly inspired the SDGs because it seeks to make sure that all people experiencing extreme poverty are presented with opportunities to improve their living conditions. The United Nations seeks to give people in disadvantaged communities a platform to share their grievances and how they would like their communities to improve.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was put in place to highlight the ongoing participation of people living in extreme poverty. As situations differ from community to community, all the programs implemented need to be tailored towards the specific needs of a single community. In order to establish an inclusive world, organizations and individuals needs to form strong partnerships with all people living in extreme poverty.
