There are an estimated 1.8 billion youths between the ages of 10-24. This is the largest population of youth in history. Unfortunately, 1 in 10 of the world’s youth live in high-danger conflict zones and over 20-million children do not attend school. Political unrest, forced labor, and a scarcity of space for political and civilian conversation increase the isolation of the youth. The UN General Assembly established International Youth Day, which occurs annually on the 12th of August, as a means to shed light on the most pressing issues affecting the youth in society.

There is a dire need for youth to find safe spaces where they have the freedom to collaborate and address their needs and interests. Youth need to be given a platform whereby they can freely express themselves and take part in decision making. The United Nations advocates for youth to find safe spaces to exercise their leadership, governance, and potential.

The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development stresses the need for providing inclusive and sustainable urbanization. The New Urban Agenda also stresses the need for the youth to have access to public spaces that allow them to interact with their families and bridge gaps between different generations.

As more youth rely on technology to remain connected to the world, many use it as a tool to be a part of political and social conversations. International Youth Day encourages giving the youth a platform in all avenues, including the online world.
