Although many people across the world are affected by terrorism, victims tend to be spread across a number of Member States. Victims of terrorism have an ongoing battle to have their voices heard. They have to negotiate for their rights and to be treated with dignity. It is reported that victims of terrorism often feel a deep sense of neglect once the turmoil in their community settles.

 

Only a small number of Members States possess sufficient resources to assist with the short and long-term needs for victims to fully integrate back into society. Resources need to assist victims find complete physical and mental healing. Victims will not be able to heal from extreme trauma unless presented with adequate treatment for their physical and mental well-being.

 

The key in supporting victims of terrorism is in the hands of Member States. The United Nations plays a significant role in supporting Member States put Pillar I and IV of theUN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in practice. In order for victims to find peace, Member States need to stand in solidarity and provide support. Victims need a network offering support to organizations and individuals. The U.N. has been constantly working to make resources available to victims in need.

 

This year, the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism will focus on standing in solidarity with those affected by terrorism. Member States will be invited to demonstrate their support for victims and victims’ families. The purpose of the day is to honor those who have been affected on a national, regional, and international level.
