25-year anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda
7 April 2019
On April 7, the United Nations commemorated the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. For the 25-year anniversary of the genocide there were activities involving a memorial ceremony at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and an event at the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters in New York.
The Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations was front and center and the Rwandan president, Paul Kagame, was present for the programs at the UN. The genocide started in Rwanda on April 7, 1994 and 800,000 Tutsis, moderate Hutu and others were killed in less than three months.
The UN Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres, called for an end to xenophobia, racism and intolerance in many parts of the world. He implored public leaders to come with ways “to address and mitigate the root causes that undermine social cohesion, and create conditions for hatred and intolerance.”
