World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was established in remembrance and honor of those who have lost their lives in road traffic accidents. The Day has evolved to an important way to mobilize efforts in preventing road traffic casualties. It creates an opportunity to draw substantial attention to just how impactful the emotional and economic devastation is. This day is also a way to recognize efforts by rescue missions and helpful civilians.
Remembrance services and vigils were held in various countries in 2008. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Africa, Uganda and the United States, and almost every country in Europe are some of the places that took time to honor lives lost in road accidents. The United Nations is dedicated to making the Day known by more people.
